The New Style Super Nintendo Entertainment System
The smaller, cuter, less-expensive Super Nintendo
In October of 1997, Nintendo released this smaller, less-expensive version of their wildly-popular Super Nintendo Entertainment System to provide a lower-cost option for shoppers uncertain about spending significantly more money for their flagship Nintendo 64.
This “New Style” SNES uses a “System on a Chip” design which was cheaper to manufacture, allowing Nintendo to lower the price of the system to a mere $99 with an excellent pack-in game (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island) included.
Today, the “New Style” SNES (aka the SNES Jr.) is sought after by collectors, in part because of it’s attractive and unique design, and especially because of a technical quirk of its design: with a simple internal modification, the “New Style” SNES provides extremely high-quality video output via “RGB” cables, providing the cleanest and brightest picture of any SNES version.
