The Nintendo GameCube
Nintendo’s funky little purple box contains a big library of excellent games.
Nintendo’s GameCube is a perfect example of what has made the company so beloved for over 130 years: it is fun, funky, whimsical, and unlike anything that existed before.
Released in 2001, the GameCube was Nintendo’s first attempt at a mainstream disc-based home console. Unlike the NES, SNES and N64 which all used chunky game cartridges, GameCube games come on small DVD discs. In keeping with this shift towards more modern hardware, the GameCube also supported an optional network module to enable multiplayer gaming over the Internet - a fairly uncommon feature in the early 2000’s.
With its quirky looks, built-in support for 4 controllers, and large library of great games, the GameCube was often overlooked in the era of bigger, more powerful competitors like the Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox. Nevertheless, the GameCube is a ‘hidden gem’ of home gaming, offering many all-time classic titles:
Chibi-Robo
Super Mario Sunshine
Baten Kaitos Origins
Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2
Metroid Prime 1 & 2
Tales of Symphonia
Luigi’s Mansion
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Star Wars Rogue Squadron I & II
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
