The Super Nintendo Entertainment System

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (“SNES”) took everything we loved about the NES and made it… Super.

Released in the US in 1991, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System expanded upon the previous NES in almost every way. A powerful 16-bit processor enabled richer and more complex graphics, while a dedicated audio chip could pump out sophisticated stereo sound. The SNES controllers also improved over the NES, with more face buttons and the introduction of “shoulder buttons” adding even more options for controlling gameplay.

Game developers took great advantage of these enhancements, resulting in a truly excellent library of games. During its lifetime the SNES sold nearly 50,000,000 units worldwide, and the system is home to some of the greatest games of all time, including many standout titles:

  • Star Fox

  • Killer Instinct

  • Super Mario Kart

  • Secret of Evermore

  • Zombies Ate My Neighbors

  • Street Fighter II: The World Warrior

  • Donkey Kong Country

  • Super Metroid

  • Final Fantasy II & III

  • Chrono Trigger

  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

  • Super Mario World
