Nintendo Game Boy
For today’s entry in my ongoing “Zscaler Logo Displayed on an Old, Obsolete or Weird Device” series, I’ve got something that piggybacks on another recent post. Some of you may remember that on April 1st, I unveiled the world's first and only Zscaler-themed video game, “Super Zero Trust Adventure,” which I created for the original Nintendo Game Boy. That inspired me to finally undertake a project I’ve been thinking about for 4-5 years, ever since I bought a very-broken Game Boy at a flea market. So, this past weekend I set about completely rebuilding and modernizing an original Game Boy from 1989!
The list of repairs, improvements and upgrades is substantial:
New all-white case
New tempered glass screen cover
New IPS LCD panel with multiple color palette modes & variable brightness
New display driver board
New “CleanJuice XL” power circuitry
Internal rechargeable battery pack
Internal USB-C charging port hidden inside the battery compartment
New direction pad and A/B buttons
New “CleanAmp” audio driver circuit (this thing is LOUD and clear now!)
New speaker
New button membranes (makes them feel nice and clicky instead of mushy / worn out)
New power switch cover
Repaired the volume knob
Repaired the power switch
Repaired the cartridge slot
Literally all that remains of the original Game Boy is the motherboard and the grey Start + Select buttons - every other piece of the system has been replaced / upgraded. I cannot get over how great my Game Boy games look now, compared to the blurry, washed-out original display. Of course, the most beautiful game of all is Super Zero Trust Adventure… 😁
