Power Mac G4 Cube
Given that this week marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Mac OS X, and given that my first experience with OS X was on a Power Mac G4 Cube at a school computer lab back in ~2001, you can probably see where I’m going for my next entry in the “Zscaler Logo on a vintage computer” series. Featured today is my heavily-upgraded Power Mac G4 Cube. It was originally a normal Cube, but somewhere around 2006-2008 I started “hot rodding” it, with the following changes:
Case was upgraded to a “PowerLogix ClearCube” enclosure, which is slightly larger than the original (for improved cooling) and is completely see-through on all four sides
Original 450MHz G4 CPU was upgraded to a PowerLogix dual-G4 running at 1.3GHz
A low-noise fan installed
The heat-sensitive power board was relocated with a special cable and mounting bracket, to benefit from improved airflow
RAM bumped to maximum
Stock hard drive was replaced with a 60GB SSD
GPU was upgraded to support “Quartz Extreme” graphics
All things considered, it’s a beastly little computer for its time, and still works like a champ. Hope you guys get a kick outta this too. Happy Friday, everyone!
